Exclusive Interview – Roger Cross, Former Star of 24

March 25th, 2010

Curtis Manning of CTU was one hell of a patriot, but that ended up being his downfall. Curtis was a loyal member of CTU and a loyal friend of Jack Bauer, but it was his friend Jack Bauer who had to murder him for the greater good earlier in this season. This was an unfortunate blow for 24 fans who had come to love Curtis Manning as a character, and also was a blow to the actor who played Curtis Manning, Roger Cross.

Roger Cross sat down for an exclusive interview with Roger Cross recently, and Mr. Cross seems like an all-around genial fellow. He started his career in life as a commercial pilot, but ended up in Hollywood as a stunt man. Born in Jamaica, Cross spent his first 11 years of life there before emigrating to North America for good with his parents. It became clear to him that his path was going to end up in the acting realm and so he pursued it fully.

He got his role on 24 and, although it was originally slated to only be a 6 episode arc for the Curtis character, the show ended up keeping him for full two seasons and the beginning of this last one. His death had nothing to do with how the show felt about him, but just was meant to give Jack Bauer more torment, as if he needed any more. Roger Cross will continue to act in Hollywood, although he doesn’t know where he’ll end up next. Wherever it is, we’ll be watching.

The Ghost and Mrs Muir

March 21st, 2010

When a book is adapted to a movie and then a television series, you can be sure it is something special. In 1945, Josephine Lesley penned the beautiful novel The Ghost and Mrs Muir. It was about a widow, Lucy Muir, her young children and her maid, who moved to a cottage near to the sea. The idea was to get away from it all (and especially for Lucy to get away from her two overbearing sisters-in-law). Gull Cottage was known locally for being haunted and could not attract any tenants for this reason. Undaunted, Lucy moved in, attracted by the low rent.

Story

Rather than enjoy the peace she craved, she soon discovered that the rumours about a ghost were true. The ghost she encountered was of a sea captain and Lucy was the only person that he would reveal himself to, albeit only in her mind’s eye. Lucy’s children and their maid were unaware of his existence. The captain at first tried to scare Lucy as ghosts are supposed to do, but she refused to be bullied and simply carried on living happily in the house. The captain could not help but respect her for her steadfastness. He gave up trying to haunt her and they began to become close friends. She decided to write his biography using true stories from his own words. Over time they would share many long conversations and intimate moments which leads the story on to a poignant and romantic conclusion.

Movie

Soon after the book had been published, Twentieth Century Fox purchased the rights to make a movie from the story. Within two years, Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney starred in The Ghost and Mrs Muir. The movie followed the book in most respects. As always, some of the readers of the original story were a little disappointed in a few of the changes that were made. In the movie, for example, the captain (the ghost) actually appears in person, whereas he is simply a voice in Mrs Muir’s head in the book. Although it was not a runaway box office hit, the movie was well received by all who saw it and by the critics.

Tv Show

Wind on another 21 years to 1968 and Fox Television were actively looking for new ideas for tv shows along the same lines of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. The book and the movie of The Ghost and Mrs Muir had many comedy moments in them and Fox executives, especially Howard Leeds who had written episodes of Bewitched, could see the potential for The Ghost and Mrs Muir, which contained the same fantasy elements of I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched. Experienced writer Jean Holloway was given the task of kicking off the writing, and soon the show was put together, starring Hope Lange as Mrs Muir (now Carolyn Muir) and Edward Mulhare as the captain.

The long gap between the film of 1947 and the tv show of 1968 meant there were less comparisons made between them. Some of those that did compare them were not always pleased with the outcome, perhaps because this was like comparing apples with pears. The show lasted for two seasons, which was (and maybe still is) about average for a comedy series and was not a bad effort considering the limited storylines that were possible.

After the Show

Both Hope Lange (Mrs Muir) and Edward Mulhare (the captain) continued to co-star in a variety of tv dramas and comedies for many years after as well as the odd film. Hope Lange died in 2003 and Edward Mulhare died in 1997.

How to Find the Titles and Singers of Songs Played on TV Shows!

March 19th, 2010

You’re watching your favorite TV show. The heroine has been resisting the charms of her male partner all series long, but finally the moment all viewers have been waiting for comes – she melts into his arms and they kiss.

Suddenly you’re no longer interested in the kiss. What IS that song playing in the background? Who is singing it? You MUST know, so you try to catch a few words and rush off to the computer to Google it. Meanwhile the heroine and her partner are either getting it on, or there’s a sniper outside the bedroom window about to kill one of them off. Who cares! You have to have that song!

I wonder if shows in the Fifties, like Dragnet or Highway Patrol, have songs playing in the background? Probably not. This is a much more recent innovation, and gradually the music played on television shows is becoming as important as the action. In “Cold Case”, for example, the music is cleverly taken solely from the year in which the action takes place. Several episodes of that show have featured the music of only one artist. Bruce Springsteen springs to mind.

When a show features a particular song, it can have quite an effect on the career of the artist, and can inspire a sudden surge in sales or downloads of the particular song. The UK group Headway has had a few of their songs featured on American shows and whether it’s a direct result or not of that exposure, they have recently been the opening act on the UK tour of Matchbox 20 and will shortly open for OneRepublic.

Another group to benefit from having their music played on TV is “The Kin”, who have had an upsurge in sales of their songs having been featured in “Army Wives” and “Moonlight”. Speaking of “Moonlight”, the vampire detective/love story which was inexplicably canceled after just one season by CBS, that show’s fans were frantically searching for the titles and singers of songs featured in each episode within seconds of the show having aired. People on the west coast were on forums searching for the music from fans on the east coast where the show had already aired.

My top song played on TV shows? It’s the one that started my interest in this modern day phenomena. It was played at the end of an episode of “Without A Trace” during a particularly poignant scene. I sort of knew the song before but the emotional scene and the powerful words had me determined to buy it. That song was, I discovered, “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley. It’s since been played in many other shows.

With a crop of new shows about to start in the Fall, it will be interesting to see if they generate as much interest in the songs they play as the shows themselves.

Death Note

March 11th, 2010

The Plot: The series focuses on Light Yagami; a 17-year old intelligence student, bored with his life and disgusted at the state of the world around him. One day his eyes fall over a notebook laying on the ground outside of his school. Reading the English cover, “Death Note,” and noticing that the writing inside is also in English, Light decides to take it home to read it. Within the next 5 days, Light has killed hundreds of people by just by watching and recording names of criminals from the news. The Death Note enables him to kill anyone whose face and real name is known. To know more about the rules of the notebook read the terms of the Death Note.

Later a Shinigami (God of Death) named Ryuk approaches Light and tells him that the note book in his possession in fact belong to him. Ryuk tells Light that only the owner of the Death Note can see him and that he, Light, is now the owner of it and may use it as he chooses. Light tells Ryuk that he plans on using the Notebook to kill criminals and clear the world of crime. Within the first chapter alone, he kills over 250 criminals.

Eventually, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization (ICPO) and a strange detective known only as “L” gets involved. L already knows that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as Kira, is located in Japan. L has also deducted that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realises that a detective is following him, and knows that L will be his greatest nemesis. A game of psychological “cat and mouse” between the two characters begins. Light is constantly trying to evade suspicion by the detective L while maintaining his identity as Kira.

Written rules: The Death Note comes with its own set of rules, the main rules are as follows:

The human whose name is written in this note shall die. This note will not take effect unless the writer has the subject’s face in their mind. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected. If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the subject’s name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not specified, the subject will simply die of a heart attack. After writing the cause of death, the details of the death must be written within the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

Reception: To date the manga has sold over 6 million copies all over the world. In 2007 Play magazine named it as the best anime in the Anime Year in Review. It has been rumored that the author and artist of the manga; Ohba and Obata had been persuaded to lengthen the storyline when its popularity increased. Originally, they has only intended to make it half as long. To date there are over 100 Death Note fan websites, and thousands of fan fiction and fan art entries over the web, such as the Death Note Wiki, which currently has over 130,000 members and the Death Note Fan Site, which has over 1 million users. Over the course of 2009, a Hollywood movie was announced, drawing further fans into the series and sparking new debate over who should play various roles.

Personal Review: Death Note draws in the crowds because it is unique. The anime has a simple story line, with a complicated overall plot that had to be followed with real thought. The animation is one of the best, with excellent shading and detailed character drawings, with realistic expressions. The music was brilliantly created and matched the story exactly, some fans believe the epic music is what makes the series so watchable. Intelligent, witty and emotion, Death Note truly draws in viewers an is really one of those series that you can’t stop watching. Intense animation with likable characters and a brilliant plot-line. I give the animation 10/10 – the perfect animation which could not have possible been any better!

Movie Review – Sherlock Holmes

January 25th, 2010

Director: Guy Ritchie.
Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong.
Based On: The Sherlock Holmes series or novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I keep reading that true fans of the Sherlock Holmes series of novels will be appalled by director Guy Ritchie’s take on his version of this literary classic, but in my opinion this is exactly how I picture Holmes when I read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s words. Holmes was an opium smoker, and Ritchie’s depiction of how he lived is a mirror of how drug addicts have survived over the years (even the well to do ones!).

Guy Ritchie is best known for his edge of the seat action movies such as Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and initially I questioned whether he could do justice to something as well known as Sherlock Holmes. I am more than happy to report that my fears were ungrounded, as I sat through over 2 hours of riveting entertainment. This is a dark movie with black magic undertones, but it is set in what I consider the greatest recreation of Victorian London I have ever seen in a movie theatre.

This latest manifestation of the great detective is a total reversal of anything we have seen previously about the character. Gone is the fussy, well dressed genius we have come to know, and in its place Robert Downey Jr. revels in the role of the eccentric bare-knuckle fighter that Holmes has become in this movie. The powers of deductive wisdom are still there, but in this version they are more likely to be used to demonstrate how to cripple an adversary as much as they are used to explain an event.

I’m not sure how this film will go down with diehard Holmes fans, especially if they are suckers for the sugar coated nonsense we’ve seen up to now, but this is the real Sherlock Holmes, set in the real London of the late 19th century, where murder and villainy were commonplace. While I don’t want to spoil the ending, I think I’m pretty safe in saying that Holmes and Watson resolve a seemingly impossible set of circumstances and rescue England from the grip of supernatural powers.

The film ends with Holmes and Watson about to set off to track down Professor Moriarty, which for anyone who enjoys this movie is excellent news, we now know what the sequel will be about… can’t wait.
